A well-known definition of diakonia goes back to Johann Hinrich Wichern: Diakonia acts where it identifies distress and suffering. But in a globalized world diakonia needs to redefine its position. The character of social distress has become more complicated. What the problems are and how diakonia should react can only be clarified in ecumenical discourse.
This line of thought has been taken up by an International Congress on Diakonia in Bethel in summer 2003. The title of the conference was "Supported Living or Institutional Care?" This bilingual publication documents the contributions to the conference.

Further essays pick up the thread of the conference: In presenting perspectives on an ecumenical diakonia, they formulate impulses for the further discourse in the worldwide ecumenical community.
